Some thoughts on the Section Manager JobI believe that my extensive experience in electrical engineering and management provides me the basis to perform well as Section Manager. I can devote a great deal of time and energy to the work, and both time and energy are necessary to excel in this position. I am prepared to do that which is necessary to propel our section forward to the next level. Furthermore, I believe that I can be of service to individual hams and to clubs, as your new Section Manager. The real purpose of the Section Manager position is to be an advocate for hams and a link between the individual ARRL members / affiliated clubs and the League. Any questions pertaining to problems, questions, ARRL organization, or any matter concerning affiliated clubs could be referred to me as your Section Manager, for solution or referral. The selection of a complete staff of hams to assist me is critical. Several very qualified people already have come forward to assure me that they will take some of these cabinet positions. I can motivate our volunteers to work very hard for the ham community, the ARRL organization, and the public interest. Although emergency communications and public service are important, I will never forget that amateur radio is a very diverse subject. Many consider the technical challenges and operating skills to be important. Net operations are important to many, while contesting presents many challenges to others. DX operations combine both the technical and operating skills. Many hams consider amateur radio to be a hobby; I personally consider it to be much more. Knitting, stamp collecting, genealogy are hobbies. In no other “hobby” does public service mean so much. The area of emergency communications is the reason why I came back to amateur radio. Emergency communications are vitally important and we can improve our approach for providing this service. We need an EC (Emergency Coordinator) for each county, if possible, as this is the political subdivision chosen by the DHS (Department of Homeland Security) for organizational purposes. Each county needs to have an emergency communications plan, which involves and benefits from the participation of the amateur radio community. I believe that it is vitally important to provide recognition for high-level performance and successful accomplishment. In any volunteer organization, it is usually easier to find criticism rather than praise. We must all be prepared to provide a positive public response to that which is good and a private but helpful response to that which needs fixing. Any organization will benefit from following these simple rules and that is one of my goals. Please assist me in my goal to become Minnesota Section Manager. Please vote for me when you receive your ballot from the ARRL in June. |
